Should You Get One Kitten or Two Kittens?

If you have decided to get a kitten, you may not have thought about getting a second kitten, too. Getting another cat can actually be beneficial to you and your cat.

In many families, the cat is left at home alone for long periods while the family is at work, school, or other activities. A second cat can provide companionship and keep your other cat from being lonely. Bored cats may be destructive by taking out their frustrations on your couch or urinating outside of the litter box.

You will have some days where you don't feel much like playing with your cat. If you are the only playmate, then you will feel obligated to spend with your cat. If the cat has another cat to play with, you are not under so much pressure to continually entertain the cat. You may actually enjoy your cat more if he or she is not constantly underfoot starving for attention.

If you travel, sharing a stay at a boarding center with their companion cat or staying home together with a visiting pet sitter will be easier for your cat.

Generally, two cats of the same breed will get along better. If you are considering adopting a rescue cat, you may be able to find two siblings. Often, rescue groups like to keep siblings together as this helps them to adjust faster to their new home, and they usually get along well with each other.

Having two cats is twice as fun. Watching the cats chase each other, play together, and groom each other is enjoyable and an experience that you won't have if you only get one cat. Every cat has a different personality, so you will get to experience two cats who may be vastly different in their behavior. You also get love from two cats, so if one doesn't feel like hanging out with you, the other one probably will.

Even though getting a second cat will cost more in terms of food and vet care, the advantages are tremendous. Cats live in groups in the wild, so getting a second kitten at the same time will ultimately make both cats happier.
