The American Shorthair cat is believed to have first been brought to the US on British ships; they were even along on the Mayflower. Rats were a constant threat on these ships because they ate the stored food and spread diseases. The cats got free passage to the New World in exchange for keeping the rat population under control. Upon arrival in their new homeland, the early settlers prized these cats as their hunting prowess helped protect the food supply.
American Shorthairs make wonderful pets due to their affectionate and gentle natures. As they are even-tempered and quiet, they coexist peacefully with children and other pets. Because they are highly trainable, they are often used for film and advertising spots.
