Cat Neutering Benefits

Are you considering neutering your male cat? This surgery involves castration or removal of the testicles. Unless you plan to breed him or house the cat exclusively outside, neutering offers many advantages.

First, male cats spray to mark territory. If the cat is kept inside your house, your walls, furniture and other belongings may get marked. The odor and stains can be difficult to remove. If you neuter your cat at around six months of age before he matures, there is about a ninety percent chance that the cat will not spray. And, the urine's odor will be lessened if your cat does spray.

Other behaviors can also be curbed with fixing the cat. Tomcats are considerably more aggressive than altered males. If you have children or other cats in your home, this could lead to injury of your kids or other pets. And, if your kitty gets outside, he will get into fights with other males injuring or maybe even eventually causing the death of your cat. Breaks in the skin can transmit diseases like feline leukemia or ringworm.

Unaltered male cats have a tendency to wander away from home in search of females. If you live on a busy street, your feline could get hit by a car. He could also come up missing for days at a time or even permanently.

Thousands of unwanted kittens are born every year. Unless your cat is a purebred who is being bred for producing kittens for showing, allowing your male cat to be a father could contribute to the cat overpopulation problem. Many of these cats either live their lives as feral cats in the wild or are put to sleep. Others may end up taking space in a no-kill shelter or foster home. Your kitty should only be a father if you know you can find homes for the offspring.

Leaving your male cat intact can also lead to future health issues. If one of the testicles fails to descend, your cat could be more likely to develop a tumor. The likelihood of other male cancers is also reduced.

If your male cat is not neutered, he will develop male characteristics such as a muscular body and facial thickening. These physical changes can be prevented if the animal is neutered before maturation.

Neutering your male cat offers many benefits. You will have a happier, healthier cat that will be enjoyed by your family for many years to come!
